Genre is a way of catogorising different types of media such as music, film and television. For example different Genres of music could include: Rock, Pop, Reggae, Rap, Punk and Jazz to name a few, these genres can define different tastes in these types of media as well as determine a difference between these. Certain people are defined by a certain genre, for example Led Zeppelin are known for being Rock in contrast somebody like Katy Perry is more predominately known for being a pop artist.
Also the same applies for film. Genres can include Comedy, Horror, Thriller or action. Certian film franchises stick with a particular genre. E.g. SAW tend to be Horror or Star Wars are all Sci-Fi and fans of this genre can use this to help them find more content of a similar genre.
